Eagle Raceway
Thompson, Vanover, Richards, Drueke & Wayman are victorious at Eagle Raceway
By Greg Soukup
The Days of Thunder Clash presented by Nebraska Realty, S & L Trenching and Empire Fence held at Eagle Raceway Saturday could only be described as nearly perfect!
169 teams showed up to put on a great show for the nearly overflow crowd under a clear blue sky. And a great show it was!!! A total of 31 races in the 5 classes plus the always entertaining School Bus Races following the final checkered flag sent everyone home knowing that there just is no better place to be on a Saturday night than at America’s Home Track.
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing.
The first A Feature was for the IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars. Tyler Drueke’s #12 was first back to the flag stand on lap 1 followed by the 25 of Gunnar Pike, Gene Ackland’s 14G and Shayle Bade in the 03. Bade passed Ackland for 3rd on lap 3. Adam Gullion put the 91 into fourth place on lap 6. Drueke started catching the tail of the field on lap 9. Jason Danley’s 4X slowed to a stop on the back stretch on lap 13 to slow the action, bringing out the Eastepwheels.com Choose cone. Gullion passed Bade on the restart for third as Brandon Bosma put his #23 into fourth after also getting by Bade. Lap 16 saw Cole Wayman get too high in turn 1, hitting the wall with his right rear. That sucked his front end into the Armco Barrier and sent him pirouetting through the air. He was unhurt but his night was done and he headed to his pit to get strapped into his sportmod. Gullion again used the restart to move up a spot, passing Pike for second with Billy Alley joining the leaders putting the #11 into fourth place. Alley moved up to third the next lap, lost the spot back to Pike with 7 to go but regained the position the following lap. The top 4 went unchanged to the checkers with Drueke, Gullion, Alley and Pike your top 4.
He said “We were okay tonight; we could have been a little bit better. I was worried as the race went on about the rubber coming in. I definitely was charging the top pretty hard, and I didn’t want anybody to try and slide underneath med, find the rubber before me. So, I caught lapped traffic, paying attention to what they were doing to see where the rubber was. I think I did a fairly decent job of not letting anybody get inside of me.” Tyler’s sponsors include Forbes Motorsports, Cherney Enterprises, LLC, American Trailer Co. , Drueke Trucking & Ranch, Zoz Farms, Jeffres Trucking LLC, Angels Energy Service, Johnson Farms, Kings Auto Supply, Jimbell, Double Z Express, Gordon Electric Inc., Midwest Racing Performance, J&J Auto Racing, Speedway Motors Racing Engines, Victory Fuel.
Next on the track was the A Main for the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods and it was a doozy!! Aiden Floyd put the 7F out front on lap 1 with the 15 of Tyler Deeke, Justin Bell’s 9X and Luke Williams on the 75 rounding out the top 4. McClain Reed passed both Williams and Bell on lap 3 to jump up to third place, moving Bell back to fourth. Cole Wayman joined the leaders on lap 5, putting the V18W into fourth. Wayman moved up to third the next circuit as Reed took over second as Deeke fell back to fourth. Williams passed Deeke the next lap to move back to fourth. Wayman got past Reed the next lap for second place but lost the spot back to Reed the following circuit. Wayman returned the favor, passing Reed with 9 to go. Luke Williams got into turn 1 too fast and slammed the right middle of his racer into the implement tire guarding the pit entrance at full speed. Bell had nowhere to go, could not get stopped and ran into Williams. Williams was not seriously injured, but his car was severely damaged. The choose cone was again brought out and at that time your top 4 were Floyd, Wayman, Derek Hall’s 44D and Reed. 9 Laps remained when Breanna Pfansteil looped the 33B on the front stretch to bring out the yellow flag. The subsequent restart saw Reed get by Hall for third. Wayman drove around Floyd for the lead the next time around but Noah Williams spun the 27W out in turn 1 for another caution. Wayman used the middle groove through turns 3 and 4 to move around and past Floyd for the lead with 6 to go as Adam Vrbka put the 7V into fourth place. Reed also passed Floyd the next time around to grab the second spot. The top 4 remained unchanged with Wayman first, Reed second, Floyd third and Vrbka fourth.
This was Cole’s third victory of the 2025 season at Eagle after starting in 10th. He was doing quadruple duty, racing his Racesaver Sprint, his Sportmod, Dan Jackson’s A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car and running a school bus after the races. I kidded him by saying that by the end of July or early August he should be racing in all 5 classes, to which he replied “That would be pretty fun! I would never say no to Racing anything.” I then mentioned his mishap in the sprint feature and asked if this victory helped to make up for it. He said “In a way, in a way. I guess I’m more sore than anything. We can always fix the car, but it sucks being sore. I guess you could say that I made up for it. Since there were 5 heats I was in the back of the invert. I ran every line on the track, from the bottom to the top. Once there was a yellow and I got to restart on top. I went right through the middle and pretty much just stuck with it until the end.” Cole’s sponsors include Vermeer Racing and Fox Automotive.
Dustin Andersen put the 8A out front of the Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modified finale with Nate Thompson’s 3T second, the 21 of Tracy Harr and his son Tyler Harr fourth in the 21T. Clint Homan passed Tyler Harr on lap 2 to put the 27 into fourth on lap 2 and then got past Tracy Harr for third on lap 8. Thompson went around Andersen for the lead on lap 10. 7 laps remained when Shawn Harker passed Tracy Harr to advance to the fourth position and moved up to third with 3 to go. Your final top 4 were Thompson, Andersen, Harker and Homan.
This was Nate’s first win this year. He stated “That was a really good race between Andersen and me. We’re really good friends and talk on the phone daily. We were side by side, never bumped or banged so it was great. It ended up pretty danged good. I want to thank everybody that helps out on the car. My wife, all 3 of my kids are always there every week and of course Libby. Everybody does a portion of the work, whether it’s cleaning the trailer, cleaning the camper, washing the cars, and everything else.” Nate’s sponsors include T3 Fabrications, Slacker Properties, Razor Chassis, NP Dodge, Assassin Engines and Nebraska Septic.
The 23T of Trey Collins led lap 1 of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature, followed closely by the 65 of Brade Burhenne, Zach Gimpel in the 25Z and Chase Stanley’s 24C. Dillon Richards passed Stanley on lap 2 to put the 24R into fourth. Gimpel grabbed the lead from Collins on lap 3 as Richards moved up to second. Colin Hein in the 19H passed Burhenne for fourth on lap 6. We were down to 5 laps left when Richards went around Gimpel to take the lead. Richards held off Gimpel for the win, Gimpel was second with Collins third and Hein fourth.
This win made it 5 for 5 this season at Eagle Raceway and marked his 25th on the year for the driver they call ‘Kid Perfect’. I joked with him a little, asking if he ever got bored of winning and he said “Well, last night we ran second, so it’s nice to be back in victory lane again. I think his name is Zach Gimpel and he ran a hell of a race! He was just a little loose off of the corners once in a while and I was able to sneak by him. I knew that if I could take the bottom line from him one lap that I was going to get him. I saw him coming to the checkered flag, I was on the top and we held on for the win.” Dillon’s sponsors include Koozer Painting, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, Swift Racing Springs, S & L Trenching, Noonan Industries LLC, Multi Fire Plug Wires, Aero Wheels, Integra Shocks, Backspin Entertainment, Van’s Waterproofing, Toy Scout, Nelson Tree Service, Cat’s Fireworks, Seven2Carts, Epp Farms, Wiring Solutions, Precision Auto Tune Inc., Neapco, In Memory of Jr Craig, In Memory of Tom Miller, Troy Cepak, Jet Racing, Extreme Motorsports, Schafer’s Oil, Schoenfeld Headers, Inline Healing, 4G’s Powder Coating and Freese Farms.
The A1 IMCA Stock Cars were this week’s feature class, competing for $600 to win. Kyle Vanover took off from the pole position in the #19 to lead lap 1 of their main event. Rounding out the top 4 were Travis Patterson’s 14TK, the 5B of Matt Boucher and Trevor Baker’s 25!. Tyler Jackson got past Baker on lap 3, putting the 13T into fourth place. The next lap saw the 1C of Scott Carlson get sideways in turn 1, collecting the 3T of Nate Thompson, Zach Bohlmeyer’s 24Z and the 49 of Ryan Harris. The choose cone was set on the front stretch and the ensuing lineup was Vanover, Boucher, Patterson and Jackson. Patterson gave third place back to Jackson the next time around, only to retake the position on lap 5. Cash Beckman looped the 44X in turn 3 on Lap 7 for another slowing of the action. Benji Legg passed Patterson on lap 8 to put the 84 into fourth and jumped up 2 spots on lap 10 to advance to second with Boucher moving back up to fourth. Dan Jackson spun to a halt at the bottom of turns 1 and 2 with 7 to go and the yellow lights were lit in the corners. Thompson had worked his way back up through the field and passed Boucher for fourth with just 5 to go. Tim Drake’s 55X spun to a halt at the bottom of turn 2 with 4 to go. Chad Andersen, who had transferred from the B Feature passed Thompson on the restart to advance to fourth place. Jackson got around Legg for second the next lap and Andersen also got past Legg the final lap to make the final top 4 Vanover, Jackson, Andersen and Legg.
Vanover is a multi-time winner at Eagle already this season with this being his fourth on the year. He related “I started at the back of the heat race but Easton drew me the pole for the feature and luckily I did not back up. The worst part about starting on the front row is there’s only 1 direction to go. Luckily, we stayed out front. We kept having yellows and the 13T was right there and on a couple of the yellows Benji was right behind me. I tried to keep maintaining my pace and not give up a whole lot of room on the bottom. I was all by myself but lost that route thanks to all of the yellows. I want to thank all of my sponsors and everyone that helps with the car”. Kyle’s sponsors include Green’s Furnace and Plumbing, Bigg Johnson Chassis and Avid Realty.
And then it was time for the fan favorite, the School Bus Races!! The entrants were Cole Wayman, Dave Carter, Adam Armstrong, Jason Danley and Chad Andersen. Armstrong managed to bring it home in first place.
